Whether a death is sudden and unexpected, or anticipated after a period of illness, no amount of planning can fully prepare you for the loss of a loved one. At such a difficult time, even the simplest decisions can feel overwhelming. The following information guides you through what you need to do in the days following a death.
First, contact a medical professional, who will attend to certify the death. If they are satisfied that the Coroner does not need to be informed, you can then contact us. We will arrange, with you, a convenient time to collect your loved one and bring them safely into our Chapel of Rest.
Contact us and we will advise you on your next steps. We will liaise directly with the hospital or home to arrange bringing your loved one into our care.
If your loved one passes away in hospital, you will need to register the death before we are able to attend.
You will first need to contact either your GP or the Bereavement Office at the hospital to begin the process of obtaining the Medical Certificate. Once issued, the certificate will be forwarded to the Medical Examiner, who will contact you within 72 hours of receiving it.
After you have spoken with the Medical Examiner, the certificate will be sent to your local Register Office. A registrar will then contact you directly to arrange an appointment for you to register your loved one’s passing.
Once the registration has taken place, the registrar will provide you with your copies of the death certificate. They will also either hand you the Green Form, which we require, or—more commonly—email it directly to us.
